Embrace Autumn Calabrese’s Key Mindset Shift For Better Health
The BODi Super Trainer shares how one simple mindset shift can change your approach to fitness and health.
In the fast-paced world we live in, making time for fitness often feels like a daunting task. Fitting in a workout after a busy day or meal prepping before a long shift is simply not feasible for a lot of us—Because not everyone has the luxury of time, right?
But what if the real issue didn’t have anything to do with time at all?
Autumn Calabrese, a BODi Super Trainer and health mogul, reminds us that we all get the same 24 hours in a day. It’s all about prioritizing your health and well-being, within your busy schedule, when you think about how so many are juggling so much.
“Instead of saying ‘there’s no time,’ try saying ‘it’s not important to me,’ and see how that sits in your body,’” she advises. As the author of Lose Weight Like Crazy Even If You Have a Crazy Life!: Life Lessons and a Breakthrough 30-Day Nutrition and Fitness Solution! Calabrese shares the message that by simply changing your mindset, you can transform how you view your priorities and ultimately, change your approach to your health.
“It feels very different to say it’s not important enough to take care of myself than it is to say I don’t have the time,” she explains. “People say it’s so hard to eat healthy, or that it takes so long to cook. But if you really think about it, it takes no time to grab an apple or to throw a salad in a bowl with some protein on top and enjoy it.”
Rephrasing your thoughts and beliefs when it comes to how challenging it is to lead a healthier lifestyle will force you to identify what truly matters to you. For example, do you have enough time to binge-watch TV shows but not enough time for a workout? Is scrolling through social media a better use of your time than preparing a nutritious meal?
Once you start to examine how you spend your time, you’ll likely find opportunities to incorporate healthier habits into your routine. It’s just about making conscious choices that align with your priorities.
The creator of highly successful workout programs, 21 Day Fix, and 80 Day Obsession Calabrese emphasizes that even small changes can have a significant impact over time—such as a quick, 30-minute workout.
She herself is no stranger to a hectic schedule and reflects on a time in her life when she worked 14-hour days as a trainer while being a single parent, and still made time for the gym. “Within those 14 hours of training other people and being a single mom to a three-year-old, I still had to fit in 2 hours of training for myself, meal prepping and cooking,” she recalls.
She “used to live paycheck to paycheck for most of [her] life” and “sometimes wouldn’t know how [her] next bill was going to be paid.” But Calabrese never let those challenges stop her from prioritizing her health.
“It’s really easy to look at somebody like me, where I’m at right now, and assume that I don’t understand how difficult it would be but you have to remember, I wasn’t always here,” she emphasizes.
From growing up in a middle-class household in Ohio to now being a topBODi super trainer with over 140 million views and counting, Calabrese believes that if she can make the time for her health, anyone can, regardless of their circumstances.
“Where there’s a will, there is a way to do it,” she says. “If you say there’s no time, then you’re not going to find the time and you’re not going to make the time. But if you say it’s important to you, you’ll realize that we all get the same 24 hours, and if there are tons of people with very busy schedules that manage to make it work, then you will too.”
In today’s day and age, Calabrese acknowledges that it’s common to make excuses, especially when the media today “encourages it,” but it’s important to rise above that.
“We’re constantly bombarded with messages telling us that we should feel okay eating junk food and that we worked so hard throughout the day that we don’t need to work out our bodies. But a body in motion will stay in motion, and a body at rest is going to want to stay at rest,” she says.
The first week or two of adopting a new mindset and philosophy toward your health may be uncomfortable or challenging, but Calabrese says it’s all part of the process.
“You’re going to have to break through that and train your mind as much as you train your body,” she says. Calabrese is a huge advocate for having the right mindset. In her workout programs and her book, she shares various motivational tips and mindset techniques to help you get started.
So next time you find yourself thinking that you don’t have the time for a workout, make sure to ask yourself, “Is this important to me?” and begin down the path of prioritizing your health one mindset shift at a time.
